Building Connections Through Flower Power

Carolyn Wilson's life experiences are as diverse as the flowers she grows. She was born in Long Beach, California and grew up in a Navy family. During her youth, Carolyn's family did two turns in Norfolk, Virginia — home to the world’s largest naval base. She also lived in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Maryland and Washington D.C.

Carolyn studied microbiology at the University of Maryland. After graduation, she worked as a cancer research technician and a realtor. She also married. Her late husband was a Justice Department attorney.

Carolyn developed a love for growing flowers at a young age. “It’s a wonder that I didn’t major in botany,” she quipped.

Carolyn moved from Washington D.C. to Harrisonburg and planted herself in Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community’s Park Village neighborhood where she blooms today. She moved for a more relaxed lifestyle where she could continue growing plants and flowers. While she enjoys traveling to various garden and flower shows, she embraces the idea of "playing in your own dirt."

And that’s just what she does.

Carolyn is an avid supporter of VMRC’s Farm at Willow Run. She provides leadership to the VMRC Friends of the Farm Club and guides volunteers in a weeding and planting project to beautify the entrance to the Farm. She has planted thousands of plants and delivered hundreds of flower bouquets throughout VMRC. Carolyn delights in sharing her flowers' beauty—what she refers to as “God’s beauty,” carefully selecting varieties for their longevity.

Not only does Carolyn care for nature, but during the cold months of the year when she can't dig in the dirt, she supports VMRC’s life enrichment staff and helps escort residents in wheelchairs, both to and from campus programs and events.

Carolyn powers her connections through flowers and volunteering. This year, she received VMRC’s Claude Hess Distinguished Service Award for her outstanding service to our community. Visit our volunteer page and learn ways that YOU can power connection throughout VMRC’s community.
