Across Virginia, the population is aging rapidly. By 2030, one in five Virginians will be 65 or older, and in rural areas, about 30% of residents will be 60 and older. As the number of older adults grows, challenges such as housing affordability, access to nutritious food and social isolation become more pressing.

Volunteers are at the heart of community life. Their time, energy and compassion touch every corner of our campus, bringing joy to residents and strengthening the spirit of connection that helps define who we are. With more than 300 active volunteers contributing tens of thousands of hours each year, their impact is both wide-reaching and deeply personal.

Every year, when the Rockingham County Fair opens its gates, something special unfolds for VMRC residents and the volunteers who join them. What might appear to be a simple outing quickly becomes a day filled with connection. It is a reminder that the gift of time and presence can create joy that lingers well beyond the afternoon.

Students that volunteer at VMRC gain so much more than simply fulfilling a class requirement in a particular field of study – they create meaningful relationships with residents as well as professional connections with our highly skilled staff.
