2023: A Time Capsule of Togetherness
At VMRC, 2023 was a vibrant year filled with events that brought residents, staff and the wider Harrisonburg community together – in some cases for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
As we move into 2024, let's build upon the spirit of this past year, cherishing the bonds we created and the joy we found in everyday moments. Here are highlights from the year:
Celebrations and Gatherings:
The Leading Cirlce Brunch, held by the VMRC Foundation and the Volunteer Appreciation Banquet reconvened VMRC donors who give gifts of time and resources.
VMRC’s annual spring parade, born of the pandemic and a need to gather safely, delighted residents and visitors in May.
The annual VeggieFest event brought together our chefs, VMRC community cooks and people ready to sample all the good food made with fresh produce!
The VMRC Foundation hosted Bach on the Farm, celebrating the generosity of donors and community partners with beautiful music and delicious food.
VMRC ended the year with the much-beloved annual Celebration of Lights event.
2023 was a testament to VMRC's vibrant spirit, dedication to resident well-being and commitment to fostering connections through art, learning and meaningful experiences.
Engaging Activities and Learning:
VMRC residents visited Carter Mountain Orchard, enjoying a day of camaraderie and discovery.
Residents and staff enjoyed trips to the Rockingham County Fair and White Oak Lavender Farm.
Creative workshops like Kokedama Ball making and Zentagle drawing fostered residents' artistic expression.
OMA (Opening Minds through Art) brought together VMRC residents and JMU students for art-making sessions, bridging age and cognitive barriers.
Hilltop Reflections on VMRC's Farm at Willow Run offered a time for reflection, connection and sharing.
Intellectually stimulating talks through VMRC's Elder Exchange and Lyceum programs provided residents and guests with viewpoints and historical intrigue to discuss and ponder.
2023 has been a year of colorful expression and cultural immersion, thanks to our year-round art exhibits in the Park Gables Gallery. From thought-provoking installations to awe-inspiring sculptures, we’ve had the privilege of showcasing some of the most talented artists from around the country. We look forward to continuing this journey with residents and visitors in the coming year.
Supporting Visual Arts:
20th Annual Juried Art Exhibition: VMRC celebrated artistic talent with its annual exhibition, showcasing works from across the country and recognizing the achievements of artists like VMRC resident services manager Carol Brunk and Maryland native Maggie Jones.
Guests enjoyed art by VMRC therapist Stuart Landis. His "Soft Edges" exhibit featured relatable and serene paintings.
VMRC hosted the 37th Annual Shenandoah Valley Watercolor Society Members' Show, exhibiting a wonderful array of works by regional artists.
These are just a few of the moments that took our breath away in 2023. From heartwarming moments of connection to inspiring experiences of cultural exchange, the year has been a testament to the multifaceted life that VMRC cultivates. We can't wait to fill 2024 with beautiful opportunities for residents to age well and live fully.
